Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic and public speaker. She founded Feminist Frequency which is a website with videos and guest posts on the representations of women in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and award-winning feminist for nearly 10 years. Feminist Frequency explores how women are depicted in pop culture. Aiming to break down the stereotypes that are associated with females in popular culture, she seeks to bring attention to harassment targeted at women and the other marginalized groups of the Internet environment. Sarkeesian also holds a York University master's in social theological, philosophical and political thought. Apart from being a popular public speaker, she has given presentations at TEDxWomen XOXO Conference and United Nations Broadband Working Group. Inquiring about gender and feminism since an early age she launched her website Feminist Frequency in 2009, while still a student at the University. The ambitious young woman was slammed online for launching a website series on gender in videogames. The incident did not deter her from pursuing the project, and instead it bolstered her resolve as feminist media critic. She is a recipient of many awards for her contributions to feminism. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award winner for her work as a media journalist. She also serves as the creator and director of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit group that focuses on pop-culture gender representations.
